ADOPT - A - DOC
William S. Conkling Adopt - A - Doc Program
This program is named in honor of the late Dr. Bill Conkling, who generously served as an Adopt - A - Doc at Stand Watie Elementary in Oklahoma City for almost 10 years. Dr. Conkling was a distinguished professor of pediatrics at the OU College of Medicine from 1996-2003.
Each year, junior, senior, and alumni schools are matched with a doctor based on availability. HSOk provides doctors with an orientation as well as resources including lesson plans. The time commitment for the doctor is approximately two hours per quarter during the school year. Once the Adopt - A - Doc is assigned a school, it is up to each individual school to make contact with their physician. Adopt - A - Docs can provide, but are not limited to:
• Presentations to student, faculty or PTA
• Involvement in family health fairs
• Basic screening/referrals for children
• Walk with a Doc Day
• Q&A’s Sessions -
(Have students write questions down for doctor to answer
anonymously)
• Presentations on HSOk’s focus areas -
(Tobacco prevention, Nutrition, Physical Activity)
